Why is the Lobster-Caller™; electronic, audible, underwater bait needed?
Unlike many crustaceans and fishes, lobsters are very common throughout the world’s coastal waters. The illusion of rarity and the resulting high cost is due to the fact that ineffective baits make these shy animals difficult to catch in most areas. This greatly increases the costs and business risk for fishermen so they tend to concentrate on and excessively fish small but easily accessed areas like the Florida Keys. An example of the great harvesting imbalance this creates exists in the USA. It has about 4,000 miles of coastline occupied by harvest able spiny lobster yet only about 200 miles located in the Florida Keys is actually fished. Nearly all the remaining spiny lobster territory (98%) is virtually ignored. Competition in this small area is so intense that most lobster fishermen cannot compete without using baits that pollute or are otherwise illegal. Regardless, the amount of fuel, labor, time, equipment wear and risk is very excessive. The ecological damage to these shallow tropical reefs is equally excessive as well. Both the corals and the food chain are damaged. |
