The Lobster Caller
ABT's research included "in tank" and open water research on spiny lobster to try and discover a signal that would attract the species. After more than 2 years of research a signal was discovered and digitized. This signal was then placed in a sound delivery device that could withstand depths of up to 350 feet of water. The unit was also designed to withstand the normal abuse of use on a lobster boat and in traps dropped on the ocean floor. How does it work? Spiny Lobster do not hear like we do but rather sense vibrations in the water. ABT has isolated the particular pulse sounds that seem to draw them out of rocks and grasses to the signal. Since the sound is omni directional it reaches lobster in every direction. Scented baits, on the other hand only reach in the direction of underwater currents and tides and so has a more limited degree of reach. Here is an illustration of how the signal of the Lobster Caller differs from ordinary bait
As you can see from the illustration the 4 lobster on the graphic are reached only by the e-bait signal while remaining outside the reach of ordinary Scented bait. Ordinary Scented bait reaches only the 3-4 degrees around the directional flow of current. This factor alone shows how the e-bait is so effective - if lobster are in a 200 foot radius of the signal they can respond. Ordinary baits must catch the lobster as they migrate through a Scented path or are lucky enough to be directly in the path of a current carrying the scent.
